American politics, rebublican or democrat?

Hi Im an Irish teen, and I’d really like to know a bit more about american politics. The truth is im pretty clueless. All i know is there are 2 main groups, the republicans and the democrats. Basically in alot of the american programss and shows i watch, republicans are made fun of ( south park , family guy etc). Also i know that over here in europe,and fromm what ive heard,basically the rest of the world, no one was too fond of Bush (who i know is a republican) and everyone loves Obama (who is a democrat)

I am in no way trying to offend anyone or take sides and i do apologizee if i come off sounding ignorant, but the truth is that i am ignorant about american politics and would like to know more about the differences between republicans and democrats.
